Macmillan Coffee Morning at Homecarers Liverpool

On the 27th September, our Liverpool office took part in Macmillan’s annual coffee morning event at their head office, whilst also ‘Wearing it Green’ on the day. Our Chester office also have their coffee morning planned for the 16th October, in support of the cancer charity.

Every year, Macmillan Cancer Support hold their nationwide annual coffee morning to help raise funds to support cancer patients and their loved ones through tough times. As Macmillan is incredibly close to our hearts here at Homecarers, we wanted to take part and show our support, fundraising for the incredible charity.

So, what is it that Macmillan do?

All about Macmillan

Their mission

With figures expected to rise from 3 million to 4 million of people with cancer by 2030, Macmillan want to ensure that they are fully equipped to support cancer patients and their loved ones with emotional, physical and financial support.

They have 6 objectives that they wish to meet, helping support those with cancer:

  1. Those who are diagnosed with cancer will know to turn to Macmillan for support and guidance.
  2. Those with cancer will have a conversation with a professional to discuss their needs, to ensure this is met from day 1.
  3. Those with cancer will have their needs met with high quality services.
  4. They will encourage more people to donate to Macmillan, to ensure they have the resources to continue to provide support.
  5. They will continue to improve and adapt their strategy and processes to be as efficient as possible when providing support.
  6. They will continue to represent communities affected by cancer, to ensure they are providing the correct support based on the needs of the community.

What they do

Macmillan work in a number of different ways to support those with cancer. From research to emotional support for loved ones, Macmillan aim to cover all bases when assisting cancer patients. Here is what they do to offer support:

  1. Macmillan Support Line – used to provide expert advice to those suffering with cancer.
  2. Macmillan Cancer centres – similar to the Macmillan Support Line, these centres offer in-person guidance and expert cancer advice.
  3. Trained healthcare professionals – At Macmillan, they have a team of healthcare professionals specifically trained to assist cancer patients, including; GPs, Nurses, and Support Workers.
  4. Peer support – Macmillan ensure they have multiple avenues of resources available to provide guidance, including; their Online Community, support via social media channels, and self-help groups.
  5. Volunteer services – Macmillan have a number of volunteer services, including; their buddying service (providing emotional support), assistance with everyday tasks (shopping, gardening, cleaning etc), keeping someone company (accompanying people or driving people to appointments), and work mentoring (supporting people to return to work after treatment).
  6. Macmillan grants – one off payments designed to help support those on low incomes with costs related to their cancer.
  7. Welfare benefits advice service – this Macmillan service is used to ensure cancer patients get the benefits, tax credits, and grants they are entitled to.

Macmillan also support cancer patients with fundraising life-saving treatments and research to ensure we are moving towards a better future for those with cancer.

How our donations help

As Macmillan are 98% funded by voluntary donations, fundraising is the main factor which ensures that they can provide the services needed to support those with cancer. Your donations help with a number of factors, such as; paying Macmillan healthcare professionals for their time, funding community events and support groups for cancer patients, raising funds for their grants, funding the Macmillan Support Line, and much more.

Without our donations, Macmillan would not be able to provide the incredible service they do every single day.
